Getting Started
What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
Courtney Cicale, MS, LMFT · 2026-03-08

A first session is mostly a conversation. You do not need a prepared story, a diagnosis, or a clear goal. Bringing 'I am not sure where to start' is a completely reasonable place to start.
The first fifteen minutes
Before booking, there is a free 15-minute consultation. It exists so you can ask questions and get a feel for whether the fit is right before committing to anything.
The session itself
The first full session covers what brought you in, some background, and what you would like to be different. Toward the end you will talk about frequency and what the work might look like over the next several weeks.
Confidentiality
What you share stays between you and your therapist, with the narrow legal exceptions that apply to every licensed clinician in Florida. Those are explained clearly at the start.
