When to Consider Couples Therapy
Courtney Cicale, MS, LMFT · 2026-02-03

Couples therapy is often thought of as a last step. In practice, the couples who benefit most are frequently the ones who come in while they still like each other and simply cannot get through certain conversations.
Signs worth paying attention to
The same argument keeps repeating with different details. Conversations end in silence or shutdown. One or both of you have stopped bringing things up because it does not feel worth it. Trust has been damaged and you are not sure how to rebuild it.
What sessions actually look like
Sessions are structured and even-handed. The focus is on the pattern between you rather than on who is right, and you leave with something specific to work on rather than a general sense of having aired grievances.
